about Jesus' death |

for sin |

But he was pierced for our transgressions,
he was crushed for our iniquities;
the punishment that brought us peace was upon him,
and by his wounds we are healed.

He [Jesus] himself bore our sins in his body on the tree,
so that we might die to sins and live for righteousness; by
his wounds you have been healed.

has lifted up his heel against me.
Psalm 41:9, a Psalm of David |

Then one of the Twelve—the one called Judas Iscariot—went
to the chief priests and asked, "What are you willing
to give me if I hand him over to you?" So they counted
out for him thirty silver coins.
Matthew 26:14-15
When evening came, Jesus was reclining at the table with
the Twelve. And while they were eating, he said, "I tell
you the truth, one of you will betray me."
They were very sad and began to say to him one after the other,
"Surely not I, Lord?"
Jesus replied, "The one who has dipped his hand into
the bowl with me will betray me. The Son of Man will go just
as it is written about him. But woe to that man who betrays
the Son of Man! It would be better for him if he had not been
born."
Then Judas, the one who would betray him, said, "Surely
not I, Rabbi?"
Jesus answered, "Yes, it is you."
Matthew 26:20-25 |
| Jesus would be tried
and condemned |
|
Prophecy:
By oppression and judgment he was taken away.
And who can speak of his descendants?
For he was cut off from the land of the living;
for the transgression of my people he was stricken.
Isaiah 53:8 |
Fulfillment:
Early in the morning, all the chief priests and the elders
of the people came to the decision to put Jesus to death.
They bound him, led him away and handed him over to Pilate,
the governor.
Matthew 27:1-2 |
| Jesus would be silent
before his accusers |
|
Prophecy:
He was oppressed and afflicted,
yet he did not open his mouth;
he was led like a lamb to the slaughter,
and as a sheep before her shearers is silent,
so he did not open his mouth.
Isaiah 53:7 |
Fulfillment:
The chief priests accused him [Jesus] of many things. So again
Pilate asked him, "Aren't you going to answer? See how
many things they are accusing you of."
But Jesus still made no reply, and Pilate was amazed.

my cheeks to those who pulled out my beard;
I did not hide my face
from mocking and spitting.
Isaiah 50:6 |

They all condemned him [Jesus] as worthy of death. Then some
began to spit at him; they blindfolded him, struck him with
their fists, and said, "Prophesy!" And the guards
took him and beat him.
Mark 14:65 |
| Jesus would be mocked
and insulted |
|
Prophecy:
All who see me mock me;
they hurl insults, shaking their heads:
"He trusts in the LORD ;
let the LORD rescue him.
Let him deliver him,
since he delights in him."
Psalm 22:7-8 |
Fulfillment:
Two robbers were crucified with him [Jesus], one on his right
and one on his left. Those who passed by hurled insults at
him, shaking their heads and saying, "You who are going
to destroy the temple and build it in three days, save yourself!
Come down from the cross, if you are the Son of God!"
In the same way the chief priests, the teachers of the law
and the elders mocked him. "He saved others," they
said, "but he can't save himself! He's the King of Israel!
Let him come down now from the cross, and we will believe
in him. He trusts in God. Let God rescue him now if he wants
him, for he said, 'I am the Son of God.' " In the same
way the robbers who were crucified with him also heaped insults
on him.
Matthew 27:38-44 |
| Jesus would die
by crucifixion |
|
Prophecy:
I am poured out like water,
and all my bones are out of joint.
My heart has turned to wax;
it has melted away within me.
My strength is dried up like a potsherd,
and my tongue sticks to the roof of my mouth;
you lay me in the dust of death.
Dogs have surrounded me;
a band of evil men has encircled me,
they have pierced my hands and my feet.
Psalm 22:14-16, a Psalm of David |
Fulfillment:
And when they had mocked him [Jesus], they took off the purple
robe and put his own clothes on him. Then they led him out
to crucify him.
A certain man from Cyrene, Simon, the father of Alexander
and Rufus, was passing by on his way in from the country,
and they forced him to carry the cross. They brought Jesus
to the place called Golgotha (which means The Place of the
Skull). Then they offered him wine mixed with myrrh, but he
did not take it. And they crucified him. Dividing up his clothes,
they cast lots to see what each would get.
It was the third hour when they crucified him.

|
Fulfillment:
The soldiers therefore came and broke the legs of the first
man who had been crucified with Jesus, and then those of the
other. But when they came to Jesus and found that he was already
dead, they did not break his legs. Instead, one of the soldiers
pierced Jesus' side with a spear, bringing a sudden flow of
blood and water.
John 19:32-34 |
| Jesus would be given
vinegar |
|
Prophecy:
You know how I am scorned, disgraced and shamed;
all my enemies are before you.
Scorn has broken my heart
and has left me helpless;
I looked for sympathy, but there was none,
for comforters, but I found none.
They put gall in my food
and gave me vinegar for my thirst.
Psalm 69:19-21 |
Fulfillment:
Later, knowing that all was now completed, and so that the
Scripture would be fulfilled, Jesus said, "I am thirsty."
A jar of wine vinegar was there, so they soaked a sponge in
it, put the sponge on a stalk of the hyssop plant, and lifted
it to Jesus' lips.

Matthew 27:35 |
| Jesus was not guilty,
but would die for the sins of others |
|
Prophecy:
He was assigned a grave with the wicked,
and with the rich in his death,
though he had done no violence,
nor was any deceit in his mouth.
Yet it was the LORD's will to crush him and cause him to suffer,
and though the LORD makes his life a guilt offering,
he will see his offspring and prolong his days,
and the will of the LORD will prosper in his hand.
After the suffering of his soul,
he will see the light of life and be satisfied;
by his knowledge my righteous servant will justify many,
and he will bear their iniquities.
Therefore I will give him a portion among the great,
and he will divide the spoils with the strong,
because he poured out his life unto death,
and was numbered with the transgressors.
For he bore the sin of many,
and made intercession for the transgressors.
Isaiah 53:9-12 |
Fulfillment:
Pilate called together the chief priests, the rulers and the
people, and said to them, "You brought me this man as
one who was inciting the people to rebellion. I have examined
him in your presence and have found no basis for your charges
against him. Neither has Herod, for he sent him back to us;
as you can see, he has done nothing to deserve death. Therefore,
I will punish him and then release him."
With one voice they cried out, "Away with this man! Release
Barabbas to us!" (Barabbas had been thrown into prison
for an insurrection in the city, and for murder.)
Wanting to release Jesus, Pilate appealed to them again. But
they kept shouting, "Crucify him! Crucify him!"
For the third time he spoke to them: "Why? What crime
has this man committed? I have found in him no grounds for
the death penalty. Therefore I will have him punished and
then release him."
But with loud shouts they insistently demanded that he be
crucified, and their shouts prevailed. So Pilate decided to
grant their demand. He released the man who had been thrown
into prison for insurrection and murder, the one they asked
for, and surrendered Jesus to their will.
