| The Messiah will
have all authority |
|

For to us a child is born,
to us a son is given,
and the government will be on his shoulders.
And he will be called
Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God,
Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
Isaiah 9:6 |
Fulfillment:
Then Jesus came to them and said, "All authority in heaven
and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples
of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and
of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey
everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you
always, to the very end of the age."
Matthew 28:18-20 |
| Jesus will have
an eternal kingdom |
|
Prophecy:
Of the increase of his government and peace there
will be no end.
He will reign on David's throne
and over his kingdom,
establishing and upholding it with justice and righteousness
from that time on and forever.
The zeal of the LORD Almighty
will accomplish this.
Isaiah 9:7 |
Fulfillment:
The seventh angel sounded his trumpet, and there
were loud voices in heaven, which said:
"The kingdom of the world has become
the kingdom of our Lord and of his Christ,
and he will reign
for ever and ever."
Revelation 11:15
|
| The Messiah will
forgive sin |
|
Prophecy:
We all, like sheep, have gone astray,
each of us has turned to his own way;
and the LORD has laid on him
the iniquity of us all.
Isaiah 53:6 |
Fulfillment:
In him [Jesus] we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness
of sins, in accordance with the riches of God's grace that he
lavished on us with all wisdom and understanding. And he made
known to us the mystery of his will according to his good pleasure,
which he purposed in Christ, to be put into effect when the
times will have reached their fulfillment—to bring all
things in heaven and on earth together under one head, even
Christ.
Ephesians 1:7-10 |
| The Messiah will
be a sacrificial lamb |
|
Prophecy:
He was oppressed and afflicted,
yet he did not open his mouth;
he was led like a lamb to the slaughter,
and as a sheep before her shearers is silent,
so he did not open his mouth.
Isaiah 53:7 |
Fulfillment:
The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him and said, "Look,
the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!
John 1:29
Then I saw a Lamb, looking as if it had been slain, standing
in the center of the throne, encircled by the four living
creatures and the elders. He had seven horns and seven eyes,
which are the seven spirits of God sent out into all the earth.
He came and took the scroll from the right hand of him who
sat on the throne. And when he had taken it, the four living
creatures and the twenty-four elders fell down before the
Lamb. Each one had a harp and they were holding golden bowls
full of incense, which are the prayers of the saints. And
they sang a new song:
“You are worthy to take the scroll
and to open its
seals,
because you were slain,
and with your blood
you purchased men for God
from every tribe
and language and people and nation.
You have made them to be a kingdom and
priests to serve our God,
and they will reign
on the earth.”
Revelation 5:6-10 |
| The Messiah comes
to proclaim freedom |
|
Prophecy:
The Spirit of the Sovereign LORD is on me,
because the LORD has anointed me
to preach good news to the poor.
He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted,
to proclaim freedom for the captives
and release from darkness for the prisoners,
to proclaim the year of the LORD's favor and the day of vengeance
of our God,
to comfort all who mourn ...
Isaiah 61:1-2 |
Fulfillment:
Jesus went to Nazareth, where he had been brought up, and
on the Sabbath day he went into the synagogue, as was his
custom. And he stood up to read. The scroll of the prophet
Isaiah was handed to him. Unrolling it, he found the place
where it is written:
“The Spirit of the Lord is on me,
because he has anointed me
to preach good news to the poor.
He has sent me to proclaim freedom
for the prisoners
and recovery of sight for the blind,
to release the oppressed,
to proclaim the year of the Lord's
favor.”
Then he rolled up the scroll, gave it back to the attendant
and sat down. The eyes of everyone in the synagogue were fastened
on him, and he began by saying to them, “Today this
scripture is fulfilled in your hearing.”
Luke 4:16-21
When John heard in prison what Christ was doing, he sent
his disciples to ask him, "Are you the one who was to
come, or should we expect someone else?"
Jesus replied, "Go back and report to John what you hear
and see: The blind receive sight, the lame walk, those who
have leprosy are cured, the deaf hear, the dead are raised,
and the good news is preached to the poor. Blessed is the
man who does not fall away on account of me."
Matthew 11:2-6
To the Jews who had believed him, Jesus said, "If you
hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. Then you
will know the truth, and the truth will set you free."
They answered him, "We are Abraham's descendants and
have never been slaves of anyone. How can you say that we
shall be set free?"
Jesus replied, "I tell you the truth, everyone who sins
is a slave to sin. Now a slave has no permanent place in the
family, but a son belongs to it forever. So if the Son sets
you free, you will be free indeed.
John 8:31-36
It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm,
then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke
of slavery.
Galatians 5:1 |
| The Messiah comes
to save all people |
|
Prophecy:
He [The Lord] says:
"It is too small a thing for you to be my servant to
restore the tribes of Jacob and bring back those of Israel
I have kept.
I will also make you a light for the Gentiles,
that you may bring my salvation to the ends of the earth."
Isaiah 49:6
Then one of them, named Caiaphas, who was high priest that
year, spoke up, "You know nothing at all! You do not
realize that it is better for you that one man die for the
people than that the whole nation perish."
He did not say this on his own, but as high priest that year
he prophesied that Jesus would die for the Jewish nation,
and not only for that nation but also for the scattered children
of God, to bring them together and make them one.
John 11:49-52 |
Fulfillment:
It had been revealed to him [Simeon] by the Holy Spirit that
he would not die before he had seen the Lord's Christ. Moved
by the Spirit, he went into the temple courts. When the parents
brought in the child Jesus to do for him what the custom of
the Law required, Simeon took him in his arms and praised
God, saying:
"Sovereign Lord, as you have promised,
you now dismiss your servant in peace.
For my eyes have seen your salvation,
which you have prepared in the sight of
all people,
a light for revelation to the Gentiles
and for glory to your people Israel."
Luke 2:26-32
Jesus said: “For God so loved the world that he gave
his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not
perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son
into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world
through him.”
John 3:16-17 |
| The Messiah will
be a good shepherd |
|
Prophecy:
See, the Sovereign LORD comes with power,
and his arm rules for him.
See, his reward is with him,
and his recompense accompanies him.
He tends his flock like a shepherd:
He gathers the lambs in his arms
and carries them close to his heart;
he gently leads those that have young.
Isaiah 40:10-11
|
Fulfillment:
"I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down
his life for the sheep. The hired hand is not the shepherd
who owns the sheep. So when he sees the wolf coming, he abandons
the sheep and runs away. Then the wolf attacks the flock and
scatters it. The man runs away because he is a hired hand
and cares nothing for the sheep.
"I am the good shepherd; I know my sheep and my sheep
know me—just as the Father knows me and I know the Father—and
I lay down my life for the sheep.
John 10:11-15 |
| The Messiah comes
to seek and save the lost |
|
Prophecy:
“‘For this is what the Sovereign LORD says: I
myself will search for my sheep and look after them. As a
shepherd looks after his scattered flock when he is with them,
so will I look after my sheep. I will rescue them from all
the places where they were scattered on a day of clouds and
darkness ...'”
Ezekiel 34:11-12 |
Fulfillment:
But Zacchaeus stood up and said to the Lord, "Look, Lord!
Here and now I give half of my possessions to the poor, and
if I have cheated anybody out of anything, I will pay back
four times the amount."
Jesus said to him, "Today salvation has come to this
house, because this man, too, is a son of Abraham. For the
Son of Man came to seek and to save what was lost."
Luke 19:8-10 |
| The Messiah is Lord |
|
Prophecy:
The LORD says to my Lord:
“Sit at my right hand
until I make your enemies
a footstool for your feet.”
Psalm 110:1, a Psalm of David |
Fulfillment:
For David did not ascend to heaven, and yet he said,
‘The Lord said to my Lord:
“Sit at my
right hand
until I make your enemies
a footstool for
your feet.”'
Therefore let all people be assured of this: God has made
this Jesus, whom you crucified, both Lord and Christ."
